The Department of Climate Change, Energy the Environment and Water is seeking public feedback

The Department of Climate Change, Energy the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is currently seeking public feedback on a range of matters.

Proposed ACCU Scheme Transparency Changes

DCCEEW have also released an exposure draft that outlines proposed amendments to the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015. This follows a recommendation from the Chubb Review to improve the transparency of projects within the Scheme.

The proposal seeks to expand the project information made publicly available on the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU) project register. This includes:

  • Improved description of detail of project activities
  • Type of estimation approach used
  • Project crediting period start and end dates
  • Names of all agents involved in a project’s management

The proposed changes will promote greater transparency, which in turn will build public confidence in the ACCU Scheme. CFF is supportive of the proposed amendments, and suggests the Department consider whether this could be expanded further, whilst also providing a mechanism for withholding of data in certain circumstances.

Operation of the Nature Repair Market

Public comment was sought on the operation of the Nature Repair Market, including:

  • how to register projects
  • the concept and content of Biodiversity certificates
  • introduction of the Register
  • how Nature Repair Markets would be reported and audited to assure compliance

CFF supports the suggestions presented by the Department in principle and believe that further enhancements can be made to improve user experience without sacrificing integrity.

We welcome the opportunity to provide comment and look forward to continued engagement with DCCEEW on these matters.
