Supporting farmers to build the ecological health of Australia’s farmlands
The Australian Holistic Management Co-operative has been set up by farmers as a support to them in improving the ecological health of their farmland. Our mission is: To build recognition of our brand and our quality assurance scheme in Australia for products from regenerative agriculture and land management.
Our formation was supported by a grant from the Australian Government’s Farming Together program, where a Reference Group of more than 30 farmers participated in detailed planning and feasibility in the 9 months from August 2017 to April 2018. This project selected the approach of Ecological Outcome Verification as its quality assurance mechanism. EOV has been developed by Savory Institute for use worldwide. The brand of Land to market Australia was developed to give public profile to the work of our farmers and allow businesses and consumers to chose their spending priorities to support improved ecological of farmland. For the first time, EOV can give robust measurement of the ecological health of farmland while under production.
Since 2018, we have established AHMC as a co-operative so that farmers will own and benefit from the brand and have full control of the ecological monitoring process. In our first monitoring ’season’, we have established baseline monitoring on more than 35 farms through SA, NSW and QLD. Now we are expanding our activities to include other workshops and training that can help farmers to build the ecological health of their land and increase soil carbon.
