Position Description


The Collingwood Children’s Farm is an iconic not-for-profit urban farm situated on the Birrarung (Yarra River) on Wurundjeri land in Melbourne. Boasting an extensive range of animals, farmland and garden spaces, it is open to the public all year round offering visitors the experience of farm life in the inner city.

The farm operates a range of programs and activities supporting children and people experiencing adversity via their school educational tours, Young Farmers, disability support and community engagement programs. It also plays a key role in engaging the community by hosting a number of popular events that promote agriculture and local produce in Victoria.

The success of the farm relies heavily on word of mouth and the community effort with staff and volunteers working collaboratively to maintain the farm, keep it sustainable and to ensure visitors have a great experience.

Child-safe organisation: CCF has a zero tolerance for child abuse and is committed to the provision of a child-safe organisation. All CCF staff must undergo a Police Check and Working with Children Check prior to commencement.

The Farm Hand reports to the Farm Operations Supervisor, and is responsible for ensuring day to day care of the animals, excellence in pasture health, maintaining some infrastructure and ensuring the environmental targets set by Collingwood Children’s Farm are met.

It is expected that the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate 1-2 years minimum experience in the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in providing animal husbandry to a wide variety of farm animals and an understanding of pasture management (including but not limited to administering medication and managing diet/nutrition)
  • Demonstrated understanding of animal welfare issues, both in an urban environment and across the wider farming community
  • Demonstrated experience of working with large animals (horses, cows, sheep, goats including hoof trimming; worming; crutching and shearing etc)
  • Demonstrated experience in animal births and working with young animals. 
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and improving farm related infrastructure (fences, water troughs, feeders etc) 
  • Understanding the pedagogy of farming principles
  • Understanding of the global and national challenges facing food and fibre production
  • Experience operating a variety of farm machinery.
  • Demonstrated confidence in ability to work with people from diverse communities with diverse abilities/ working with groups/work experience/public demonstration
  • Self-starter who is willing to be accountable to stated goals
  • Open to new ideas and willing to embrace change in the face of ever changing trends and landscapes


  • Availability on weekends
  • Experience transporting animals - driving trucks or floats. 
  • Q Fever Vaccination recommended
  • Commitment to the vision, philosophy, aims and objectives of Collingwood Children’s Farm. Commitment to integrity, mission and service
  • Computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft applications and databases.
  • Current Victorian Driver’s Licence.
