Position Description

We design and operate complete ecosystems of plants and fish in vertical farms, supplying these organic products to local grocers. We operate an R&D aquaponic farm in Brooklyn and are expanding with a larger commercial facility later in 2020. Our mission is to heal the broken food system and reconnect eaters with flavorful and nutritious local food.


Our Software & Electronics team (“S&E”) develops tools to monitor, analyze, automate, and improve farm and business operations. We are seeking an experienced software developer to lead development of backend computing systems. Day-to-day work will include user discovery, system design, R&D, custom software development, system integration, testing, and deployment in a variety of languages and platforms.

Success in this role requires the maturity and ability to transform ambiguity into clarity and simple requirements into robust, working systems. This role will be delivering several significant projects to production each year along with a dozen or more small projects.


Compensation


Compensation includes a salary commensurate with a seasoned software development professional, equity shares, health insurance & wellness benefits, up to 20 days PTO per year depending on years of employment, an extension of New York State’s paid family leave for up to 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave, and additional perks including lots of fresh, free salad.

Responsibilities


  • Lead application software development projects including with small teams.
  • Proactively form relationships across the company and contribute to a culture of collaboration.
  • Develop software & systems:
  • Custom data collection including Cloud-hosted applications
  • Enterprise business system modules
  • Middleware to connect systems
  • Alarms and logging systems
  • Integrations with third-party services (e.g. Slack, PagerDuty)
  • Support tools including web apps for our environmental sensing & data systems
  • Support future advanced projects (examples):
  • Modeling plant systems — both green leafy things & our manufacturing system.
  • Computer vision and artificial intelligence for disease and anomaly detection.
  • Evaluate toolchains, development environments, and third-party services.
  • Lead development and adoption of good process & testing.


Requirements


  • Background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related.
  • Multiple years of real world experience implementing big, hairy enterprise business platforms and complex backend computing systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, flexibility, and empathy.
  • Project management experience.
  • Project lead experience.
  • Customer support / customer-driven product development experience.


Preferred Skills + Experience

Any of the following are highly desirable though not required:


  • UX design, Human-centered design, or related
  • Data analytics
  • Mathematical modeling / simulation
  • Development and support work in manufacturing environments
  • Development and support work in agricultural settings
