Position Description

The Soil Carbon Co. team is leading a large-scale research and development program in the area of microbial carbon sequestration to increase soil carbon levels in agricultural soils as a climate change mitigation and adaptation tool. The organisation is made up of both researchers and practitioners working across microbiology, soil carbon and agronomy to deliver practical, scientifically validated methods of sequestration. About the Role

The Microbe Isolation and Screening Manager will be responsible for coordinating and delivering on the Soil Carbon Co. US microbial laboratory program designed to isolate, purify, characterize, screen and store microbial samples, specimens and consortia. The role will also serve as a key liaison and supporter of efforts in molecular characterization of microbes/communities as well as greenhouse and field trialing activities. Building, maintenance and management of microbial collections is an additional key component of the role.

Initially the role will be focused on oversight and coordination of efforts with collaborators and contract research organizations to deliver on these objectives, while longer term efforts including the development and oversight of internal operations in this area. The Microbe Isolation and Screening Manger will work closely with internal and external lab based research teams in the collection and maintenance of relevant data, documentation and inventory information. Key interfaces include close collaboration and alignment with the US based Microbial Bio-Discovery and Treatment Evaluation Manager and the SCC R&D teams in Australia. 

The Microbe Isolation and Screening Manager will be responsible for:

  • Serve as key contact to internal and external collaborators in areas of microbe isolation and screening
  • Manage and optimize protocols for microbe sample processing
  • Manage and optimize protocols for microbe isolation through library creation
  • Track microbial sample and library inventories relative to target profiles
  • Prioritize microbe isolation efforts for delivery of targeted outcomes
  • Manage outcomes and use of genomic data to enable project objectives
  • Facilitate and track taxonomic identification of isolated microbes
  • Oversee and/or lead laboratory screening protocols for microbe selection and characterization
  • Manage biomaterials production and quality control for microbe R&D utilization
  • Oversee (directly or indirectly) laboratory activities spanning microbe isolation through laboratory-based screening

About You 

  • MS of higher degree (or equivalent experience) with a minimum of 5 years experience and demonstrated capabilities in microbiology
  • Demonstrated ability to manage processes and laboratory methods for delivery of desired outcomes
  • Demonstrated strength in application of appropriate scientific methodologies and related documentation
  • Execution level competencies for experimental design, analysis, interpretation, and reporting
  • Experience managing team members and/or collaborators to deliver high quality joint outcomes
  • Strong time management and progress reporting ability
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to network and collaborate through remote interactions (email, chats, phone, video conference)
  • Track record of effective collaboration for delivery of desired outcomes
