Position Description

The Soil Carbon Co. team is leading a large-scale research and development program in the area of microbial carbon sequestration to increase soil carbon levels in agricultural soils as a climate change mitigation and adaptation tool. Our purpose-driven business focuses on developing practical endophyte technologies that deliver multiple benefits to farming systems and the environment. The organisation is made up of both researchers and practitioners working across microbiology, soil carbon and agronomy to deliver practical, scientifically validated methods of sequestration. About the Role

The Plant Microbial Bio Discovery and Treatment Evaluation Manager will be responsible for coordinating and delivering on the Soil Carbon Co. US field and greenhouse activities spanning plant and soil specimen collections through greenhouse and field trialing efforts. The role will also serve as a key liaison and supporter of efforts in targeted microbe candidate discovery, greenhouse performance trials and field trial performance evaluation. 


Building, maintenance and management of data and documentation spanning protocols, agreement, data, metadata, observations and environment characterization are additional key components of the role. Initially the role will be focused on oversight and coordination of efforts with collaborators and contract research organizations to deliver on these objectives, while longer term efforts are likely to including the development and oversight of internal operations in this area.


The Plant Microbial Bio Discovery and Treatment Evaluation Manager will work closely with internal and external field and lab based research teams in the collection and maintenance of relevant data, documentation and inventory information. Key interfaces include close collaboration and alignment with the US based Microbe Isolation and Screening Manager and the SCC R&D teams in Australia. The position will initially be a remote role with possible relocation to a TBD Midwestern location within the next 12 months. 


The Plant Microbial Bio Discovery and Treatment Evaluation Manager will be responsible for:

  • Oversee and/or lead projects for plant microbial field Bio Discovery, greenhouse trialing and field trial evaluations
  • Serve as key contact to internal and external collaborators in areas of plant microbial field Bio Discovery, greenhouse trialing and field trial evaluations
  • Manage the Bio Discovery, greenhouse and field trial environment and materials characterization
  • Manage and optimize protocols for field sample collection during Bio Discovery, greenhouse trialing and field evaluations
  • Material and protocol management and delivery for the effective implementation of high-quality Bio Discovery, greenhouse trialing and field trialing
  • Experimental design, data management, routine analysis, interpretation and reporting of greenhouse and field trials
  • Lead/oversee field observation process that delivers high quality and insightful data and metadata from field and greenhouse activities
  • Manage data and reporting from field and greenhouse operations and trials
  • Manage biomaterials quality standards and delivery for Bio Discovery, greenhouse, and field trials
  • Oversee (directly or indirectly) field and greenhouse activities spanning sample collection for microbe isolation through greenhouse and field trials 


About You 

  • MS of higher degree (or equivalent experience) with strong experience in plant field and/or greenhouse research and a minimum of 5 years experience 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage field research processes and methods for desired outcomes
  • Demonstrated strength in application of appropriate scientific methodologies and related documentation
  • Execution level competencies for experimental design, analysis, interpretation, and reporting
  • Experience managing team members and/or collaborators to deliver high quality joint outcomes
  • Strong time management and progress reporting ability
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to network and collaborate through remote interactions (email, chats, phone, video conference)
  • Track record of effective collaboration for delivery of desired outcomes
