Position Description

About the Role

The individual is responsible for the planning, organization, supervision and administration of all activities related to the Farm of the Future. The role of the Manager is to execute all aspects of the Farm of the Future framework, which includes Agriculture Sustainability Practices, Technological Innovation, Alternative Energy and Educational Outreach.

This individual ensures that all elements of the Operating Framework is flawlessly executed to allow for step changes on the impact of agricultural activities/practices on the planet’s soil, water, air and biodiversity resources. This individual must be comfortable working with technologies to allow for seamless and continuous learning, and be challenged in his/her assumptions to allow for higher-level activities of themselves and their team members and help redesign the relationship between humans, farm technologies and the environment.

The Manager must nurture a culture of Innovation on the Farm of the Future to allow for the rapid integration of new ideas and the participation of a variety of players and technologies in the farm’s ecosystem.

Summary Of Qualifications

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include The Following

The Farm Manager is the Farm lead for the first Farm of the Future. In addition to ensuring the commercial production of potatoes and of rotation crops, the individual will be responsible to coordinate research, adopt new technologies and best management practices to improve the sustainability of crop production. Areas of expertise/activities include; regenerative agricultural practices, soil health management, biodiversity, digital technologies, IoT’s, precision agriculture and remote sensing technologies.

The Manager will also be involved in liaising with public and private research organizations, with employees, growers, customers and the public for the dissemination of information about the Farm activities and objectives. The Manager is also responsible for oversight of the Farm budget, ensuring activities are executed flawlessly while staying on budget; work is planned and conducted under the guidance of the Farm of the Future management team.

Projects To Include The Following

  • Research, evaluation and implementation of new technologies / agricultural practices.
  • Develop and implement solutions to achieve greater environmental sustainability, optimum plant health and productivity and biodiversity through best practices relating to crop rotation, nutrients and crop protectants utilization, field or storage management techniques.
  • Use all means of general extension communication and demonstration to advise and train suppliers, as well as showcase the Farm for driving employee engagement.
  • Support/promote Decision Support Systems for soil and crop health management
  • Attend and participate in continuous education meetings/training sessions to gain knowledge of current agricultural practices.
  • Farm budget management
  • Other duties as assigned

Education And/Or Experience

  • Required qualifications include a B.S. degree or higher in agriculture or equivalent related field plus a solid breadth of knowledge of farming.
  • Minimum of five years of experience within the agricultural industry is a requirement.
  • Candidate must have computer software skills in word processing, spreadsheets and data management.
  • Communication skills are necessary.
  • Knowledge of emerging agricultural technology and sustainability is beneficial.
